Revelation, The National Gallery of Ireland 2008

Annunciation Lilies (Sold out), etching with gold leaf, paper:65cm x 50cm, image:40cm x 21cm, Edition of 40

The Moment of the revelation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, that she would bear a child, and that this child would be the Son of God, is a much loved subject in both eastern and western Christian art. Traditionally, Mary's purity is symbolised by the presence of white lilies - in Gabriel's hand, or in a nearby vase. I have chosen to depict Madonna Lilies with a background of gold leaf, a medium frequently used in Byzantine and Early Renaissance painting, to convey a sense of majesty.
